From Science to Theology
Definition: Exploring phenomena dismissed by mainstream science. Reshaping the boundary between accepted reality and the unexplained.
In January 2017, at the Close Encounters Conference in Byron Bay, Australia, a woman using the name Anna said she had been taken aboard a spacecraft. She said the beings there used some of her eggs in a project to create human–alien hybrids. Anna did not present the story as a folktale. She said she told only people she believed were ready to hear it because she did not want to frighten anyone.
On July 20, 1976, Viking 1 landed in Chryse Planitia. On September 3, Viking 2 reached Utopia Planitia, about 6,400 kilometres away. Each lander carried biological experiments. One of them, Labeled Release, mixed Martian soil with a nutrient solution containing carbon-14 and measured radioactive gas. If microbes used the nutrients, they should release gas carrying the carbon label.
In the fifth lunar month of 1018, people in Luoyang, the Western Capital of the Song dynasty, described a hat-shaped object flying at night, entering houses, sometimes changing into a large wolf, and injuring people. When the rumor reached Kaifeng, residents shut their doors early, gathered in the streets through the night, and feared the thing ate people, exactly as the History of Song and Song-era chronicles record it.
Between Mars and Jupiter lies a gap that eighteenth-century astronomers refused to treat as an accident. In 1766, Johann Daniel Titius recorded a number sequence that roughly matched the planets’ distances from the Sun. The sequence left a position at 2.8 astronomical units, exactly where another planet should have been. When Giuseppe Piazzi found Ceres at that distance in 1801, astronomers thought they had found the missing world.
On 12 March 2004, Pravda published a report about a Russian boy known as Boriska. He was about seven when he spoke at Medveditskaya Ridge, north of the Volgograd region. He said he had once lived on Mars, flown a spacecraft to Earth, and remembered a civilisation called Lemuria. He also said ancient Mars had a thick atmosphere and developed life, then a war caused a disaster that destroyed the atmosphere. Survivors moved into cities deep underground.
On 18 August 1968, technician Emil Barnea stopped with his girlfriend and two friends in a clearing in Baciu Forest, just west of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Around one in the afternoon they saw a large, round, flattened, silvery metallic object moving slowly above the treetops, and Barnea exposed several frames with his FED-2 camera before it disappeared.
Mount Kailash rises above 6,600 metres in western Tibet. From a distance, its snow-covered summit presents four steep, almost symmetrical faces and stands apart from the surrounding peaks. Four religious traditions treat the mountain as sacred: Hindus link it to Shiva, Tibetan Buddhists connect it with Mount Meru, the Bön tradition calls it the nine-storey Swastika Mountain, and Jain traditions place Kailash in their history of liberation.
In June 2012, the University of Iowa announced a result that sounded like science fiction. A physics team led by Jack Scudder used data from NASA’s Polar spacecraft to identify a small region where the Sun’s magnetic field and Earth’s magnetic field reconnect. The process is called magnetic reconnection. At that site, charged particles from the solar wind can cross a boundary that normally keeps them outside Earth’s magnetosphere.
On 12 September 2023, at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace in Mexico City, a journalist named Jaime Maussan opened two boxes in front of lawmakers. Inside were two small figures with elongated heads and three fingers on each hand. Maussan said they had been found underground in Peru, were about a thousand years old, and did not belong to human evolution. X-ray images appeared on a screen. The phrase “alien bodies” travelled around the world within hours.
On the night of 11 November 1979, TAE Flight 297 was carrying 109 people over the sea near Ibiza when a group of lights shifting between red, white, and green moved quickly toward the aircraft. Neither military radar nor Barcelona control could find any aircraft in the area, the lights kept following, and the captain diverted for an emergency landing at Manises Airport.
On July 14, 2015, the New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto at a distance of about 12,500 kilometres. The images sent back to Earth showed a world that was not frozen solid and silent: mountains several kilometres high, a nitrogen plain thousands of kilometres wide, long fractures, and a bright heart-shaped region. Beneath that ice, geological data also point to liquid water.
On 2 March 1972, NASA launched Pioneer 10 away from Earth. Attached to its body was a gold-anodized aluminium plaque showing a man, a woman, a map of the Solar System, and the location of Earth. On the evening of 21 October 1978, twenty-year-old pilot Frederick Valentich took off from Moorabbin Airport near Melbourne in a Cessna 182L registered as VH-DSJ. He planned to fly to King Island and return. The training trip covered about 235 kilometres across Bass Strait, the waterway between mainland Australia and Tasmania.
On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. The photographs from the flight show blindingly bright ground, white suits, and a black sky without a single star.
A nuclear missile system does not normally become "offline" at many positions at once. Ten missiles lose their ready status together only if something hits the layer the whole flight shares, yet guards at U.S. bases in the 1960s and 1970s reported unusual signals just above ground before the missiles lost power or entered a no-launch state.
In 2003, heavy rain caused the ground beneath the Feathered Serpent Temple at Teotihuacan to collapse. Archaeologists found a tunnel about 103 metres long leading to chambers sealed for many centuries.
On the evening of 15 August 1977, Ohio State University’s Big Ear telescope scanned the sky as usual. It was not taking pictures. It was listening to narrow radio channels for a signal that might come from another civilisation. An IBM 1130 computer recorded intensity in 12-second intervals and printed symbols on paper.

In 1933 or 1934, Alberto Tulli, the curator responsible for the Egyptian collection at the Vatican Museums, was said to have seen a fragment of papyrus in a Cairo antiquities shop. The price was too high, so he did not buy it. He copied the Egyptian shorthand called hieratic by hand. Every night, people see the same face of the Moon, and during a total solar eclipse the lunar disk almost exactly covers the Sun. NASA calls the match a geometric coincidence; people who believe the Moon is artificial see a placement.

In 1970 Hannes Alfvén received half of the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on plasma, and the Electric Universe movement builds on that foundation to retell the origin of stars and galaxies in electrical terms. The rumour says gravity was pushed to centre stage while the galaxy's circuits do the real work of feeding the stars.
In 1989, Phobos 2 lost contact just before releasing instruments meant to measure Mars’s moon. Low density, long grooves, and an image of a strange object fuel the rumour that Phobos is an artificial construction under guard.
In 1950, physicist Enrico Fermi asked, "Where is everybody?" The question became the Fermi paradox. The Milky Way contains at least hundreds of billions of stars, NASA has confirmed thousands of planets beyond the Solar System, and yet humanity has no evidence of life beyond Earth or a confirmed technological signal sent by another civilization.
On the evening of March 13, 1997, residents of Arizona and Nevada called to report large lights moving across the sky. The earliest call preserved by the National UFO Reporting Center, or NUFORC, came from Paulden, Arizona, at about 8:16 p.m. The caller was a former police officer. In November 2004, radar crews, F/A-18 pilots, and infrared cameras from the Nimitz strike group all recorded a white Tic Tac-shaped object. The different kinds of data make it one of the hardest UAP cases to dismiss.

Between 1981 and 1985, people in Norway's Hessdalen Valley saw strange lights as often as 20 times a week. The lights hung low over the valley as points or spheres, moved slowly, changed color, and vanished.

In 1960, physicist Freeman Dyson published a strange proposal in Science: look for extraterrestrial civilizations through their heat instead of only listening for radio waves. If a society captured most of a star's light to run its machines, the visible light would be held back.
On 20 July 1969, Apollo 11 broadcast Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepping onto the Moon. Between 1969 and 1972, six crewed Apollo missions landed there, brought rock back to Earth, placed equipment on the surface, and left laser reflectors behind. NASA was not the only party receiving signals. Observatories and the Soviet Union tracked the missions' timing, communications, and paths.
On 19 October 2017, the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii caught an object leaving the Solar System. It was named ʻOumuamua, Hawaiian for “a messenger arriving from far away.” Its open, hyperbolic orbit showed that the Sun could not capture it. It entered from interstellar space, passed the inner Solar System, and continued outward. It was the first confirmed object known to have come from another star system.
At about 7:15 on the morning of June 30, 1908, the sky above the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in central Siberia turned bright. The region belonged to the Russian Empire then and lies in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region today. Evenki reindeer herders and people at distant stations saw a glowing body cross the sky. Then came a sound like thunder. Some people were thrown to the ground, camps were damaged, and fires spread through the taiga.
In December 1972, Apollo 17 carried Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt out of the Taurus-Littrow valley and closed the last crewed landing of the Apollo program. The gap between a flight already on the schedule and the flight that actually happened is where the secret-Apollo-18 story starts.
Genesis, chapters 2 and 3, tells how Adam is made from dust, receives the breath of life, and enters the Garden of Eden with its Tree of Life; when Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, they are thrown out and cherubim with a flaming sword guard the entrance so they can never come back and live forever. Read as a record that passed through generations of retelling, "God" may be the name later people gave to a group that knew how to make bodies, restart breathing, and hold a source of extended life.
In China, people have dug up or pulled from water soft masses called Tai Sui. Some are white, yellow, brown, or red, with no clear head, legs, or organs. Newspapers have sometimes called them "living lingzhi meat" and claimed that they can survive for centuries. Tai Sui is also the name of a deity linked to years and fortune in the Chinese calendar.
The Kola Superdeep Borehole in northwestern Russia reached 12,262 metres. That figure dwarfs any human building, yet against a planet with a radius above 6,300 kilometres the hole amounts to a scratch on the outer skin.
About 4.5 billion years ago, a Mars-sized body struck the young Earth. NASA describes that collision as the leading model for the Moon's origin. Molten material flew into orbit and gathered into our satellite. The hypothetical impactor was given the name Theia.

Human beings live freely in only a thin layer around Earth, from the ocean floor to the edge of the atmosphere, where conditions can kill quickly. Reaching orbit requires a rocket to reach about 7.8 kilometres per second while carrying most of its launch mass as fuel.

The Moon is Earth’s only natural satellite. It is about 384,000 kilometres away on average and takes nearly a month to complete an orbit around Earth. Grey dust, impact craters, and dark plains left by ancient lava cover its surface. Between 1969 and 1972, Apollo missions brought people, instruments, and lunar rock samples back to Earth.
More than 70% of Earth's surface is ocean. A few hundred metres below the surface, light dies quickly and pressure climbs fast, and a sonar map still cannot tell you whether a shape down there is rock, a wreck, or a built structure.
