Apollo astronauts took thousands of photographs on the Moon. In many of them, the sky is completely black and not a single star appears. It is easy to think that space should be full of light, so why did the cameras record only darkness? NASA’s technical answer is that the exposure was set for the bright lunar ground and the astronauts’ suits; the much fainter stars could not register. That answer is sound, but the darkness became the starting point for a larger rumour: humanity lives inside a controlled environment, and the “outside sky” is limited by a shell we do not yet understand.
