Mapimí’s Zone of Silence: The Missile Accident That Became an Alien-Station Rumor

On July 11, 1970, a U.S. Air Force Athena test missile left the Green River launch site in Utah. It was supposed to fly toward White Sands in New Mexico, but it went hundreds of miles off course and crashed in the Mapimí desert, near the meeting point of Durango, Chihuahua and Coahuila in Mexico. Its nose cone carried two small cobalt-57 sources, radioactive material used to measure the protective layer around a vehicle returning through the atmosphere.
