Göbekli Tepe sits on a hill in southeastern Türkiye. From about 9600 to 8200 BCE, people who did not yet use pottery built large stone enclosures there.

They cut T-shaped limestone pillars, some up to 5.5 metres high, and placed them around two larger pillars in the centre. The stones carry images of snakes, foxes, wild boars, birds, scorpions, and human arms. This was not a random collection of stones. It was a planned system with rules, symbols, and repeated designs.
