In January 1939, children at the Iowa Soldiers’ Orphans’ Home in Davenport were called to meet a university student named Mary Tudor. They were told they were taking part in speech treatment. No one told them they were research subjects. No parent was present to give permission or ask what the sessions were for.
In 1693, Isaac Newton spent months unable to sleep, eating poorly, and writing letters accusing friends of harming him. He had worked with alchemy for years, heating metals with mercury, lead, and arsenic. In 1979, two Royal Society papers examined samples of Newton’s hair and found very high mercury levels. The evidence does not prove that mercury caused his entire crisis, but it shows prolonged contact with a neurotoxic substance.
On the morning of July 2, 1951, landlady Pansy Carpenter went to Mary Reeser’s apartment in St. Petersburg, Florida. The doorknob was unusually hot. When the door opened, most of the room was still intact, but Reeser, 67, had burned almost to ash. Investigators found part of a skull, several vertebrae, one foot still inside a slipper, and greasy black residue on the wall. The chair where she had been sitting was destroyed, while many nearby objects were only partly damaged.
On September 29, 1915, a Category 4 hurricane struck the Lake Pontchartrain area of Louisiana. In the autumn of 1976, Peter Byrne of the Bigfoot Information Center sent a hair sample to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Byrne did not ask the FBI to hunt a monster. He asked its laboratory to identify the sample because his center lacked the equipment. The FBI file still shows that the agency received the sample, sent it for examination, and replied on February 24, 1977. The hair was identified as belonging to the deer family.
