Non-coding DNA contains control regions and evolutionary traces

Only a small part of the human genome directly codes for proteins. The rest was once called “junk DNA” because science did not know what it did. The ENCODE Project began mapping biochemical activity in 2003; major releases in 2012 showed that cells use many noncoding regions. The label “junk DNA” therefore became too simple. Regulatory regions, RNA genes, repeats, ancient viruses, centromeres, and telomeres do not make proteins directly but can change how cells work.
