Sakwala Chakraya: The Stone Circle Turned into a Stargate in Sri Lanka

Inside Ranmasu Uyana in Anuradhapura stands a circular carving on a low rock face. Local usage calls it Sakwala Chakraya, a name close to “cosmic cycle.” The carving is about 1.8 to 2 metres wide. It contains concentric circles, diagonal lines, door-like marks, and figures that resemble aquatic creatures around the outer edge. It sits beside Tissa Wewa, among a royal garden with bathing ponds, water channels, and Buddhist monuments.

Anuradhapura became a capital around 377 BCE and remained a political and religious centre of Sri Lanka for centuries. Ranmasu Uyana was not an empty patch of rock in the forest. Archaeological studies by Sri Lanka’s Department of Archaeology describe the gardens and ponds as a royal landscape supplied from Tissa Wewa, with embankments, channels, and smaller reservoirs. The carving appeared inside a planned space, not on an accidental boulder.
