Edward Bernays was born in 1891, an American of Austrian descent and Sigmund Freud's nephew, a renowned psychoanalyst who studied human desires and the unconscious mind. Bernays worked in propaganda during World War I, then applied those influence techniques to commerce. He disliked the term "propaganda" due to its increasingly negative connotation. The new field was called public relations, or PR.
