Visoko: The Bosnian Hill Told as a Pyramid Buried Under Earth

In spring 2005, Semir Osmanagić stood before Visočica hill near the town of Visoko in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. The hill rises more than 200 meters and, from a distance, shows four slopes that resemble the sides of a pyramid. The ruins of the medieval town of Visoki stand on its summit. Osmanagić did not see a natural hill. He named it the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun and said that soil, trees and centuries of accumulation had hidden a man-made structure older than familiar European history.

Visoko then became a story about a civilization buried beneath its own history. The rumour does not rely only on the triangular outline of a hill. It connects slopes that face near the cardinal directions, large stone slabs exposed by digging, the Ravne tunnels a few kilometers away, dry-stone walls underground and pottery fragments found in passages. The chain leads to the story's conclusion: ancient builders did not make a small mound. They shaped a whole complex of designed hills, underground routes and ceremonial space, and time later covered it with soil and stone.
