On 5 February 249 CE, the child emperor Cao Fang left Luoyang to visit Cao Rui's tomb at Gaoping. Cao Shuang, the regent running Wei, went with him, along with his brothers and much of the palace guard. Luoyang suddenly had too few commanders inside it. Sima Yi, the old minister who had shut himself away and let the capital believe he was dying, moved at once.
