On September 22, 1979, the US Vela 6911 satellite detected a double flash over the waters between the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Vela was not a weather satellite. It was designed to detect the distinctive light from atmospheric nuclear explosions after the 1963 Partial Test Ban Treaty prohibited tests on the ground, underwater, and in the atmosphere.
