In 1999 the world was rebuilding its data for Y2K while narrowing what could be discussed in public. The rumor says that combination opened a way to bend collective memory without erasing anyone's mind directly.

Most photographs still sat in paper albums. News lived in newspapers, on videotapes, and on small private servers. A valuable document often had one original and one copy in a filing cabinet. If a website closed, a tape was recorded over, or a server died, its contents could disappear for good.
