On the morning of 22 May 1999, Carl Herbert Landers left a camp near Lake Helen to climb Mount Shasta in California. He was 69, an experienced hiker and distance runner, carrying food and water and walking ahead of two friends. He never returned. The Siskiyou County sheriff’s office and forest rangers ran a ten-day search with helicopters and ground teams, but found no trace. Landers is still missing.
