In the past, stock buyers and sellers stood on the floor, shouting prices and making hand signals. Today, most orders are sent to data centers by computers. In these rooms full of servers, algorithms read prices, place orders, and cancel them faster than human reflexes. This activity is often called high-frequency trading, or HFT.
