Galileo and the 1633 Trial: When Power Ordered the Sky to Speak

On 22 June 1633, Galileo Galilei, then 69 years old, knelt before the Roman Inquisition. He was forced to declare that the Sun did not stand still at the centre and that Earth did not move around it. He had to renounce what he had written and observed through a telescope. The sentence called him “vehemently suspected of heresy,” banned his book, and confined him to his home for the rest of his life.
