In early 1955, the U.S. government set aside about 60 square miles around Groom Lake in Nevada for a special programme. President Dwight Eisenhower approved the area so a CIA team could test a reconnaissance aircraft that flew higher than any civilian aircraft of its time. Staff reached the base on private flights. Parts built in Burbank were taken apart, flown into the desert and reassembled where the aircraft would take off. The name Area 51 attached itself to the site later, and the first secret stored there was not extraterrestrial. It was the U-2. The UFO story around Area 51 began with its flights.
