Modern legend says Nikola Tesla caused it from New York with a "death beam", and that story still lacks engineering proof.

Evenk reindeer herders were thrown down. Windows broke in towns hundreds of kilometres away. Across Europe, the night sky stayed bright for several nights, and in London people could read newspapers at midnight without lamps. When survey teams finally reached the region, about 2,150 square kilometres of forest had been flattened. Tens of millions of trees lay on the ground, yet there was no large crater, no sizeable piece of a space body, and no machine wreckage to identify what had exploded.
