Maya: The City Network Beneath the Forest and the Water War Called a Disappearance

In 2016, an aircraft crossed the Petén rainforest in northern Guatemala. From the air, a person could see only a sheet of green. The aircraft’s LiDAR instruments sent millions of laser pulses to the ground and measured their return. Once the computer removed the tree canopy, more than 60,000 house platforms, temples, ceremonial courts, terraces, reservoirs, raised roads, and defensive walls appeared.
