Angkor: A City Built on Water, a Siege, and a History Reduced to 1431

When European visitors reached Angkor in the nineteenth century, forest covered many of the temples. A familiar story followed: a giant empire disappeared after one attack, leaving Angkor Wat as a dead city. That story leaves out the system that kept the region running: canals, reservoirs, embankments, roads, and rice fields spread across more than 1,000 square kilometres.
