Kola Borehole Not Just Drilling Rock. It Touched a Hot, Noisy World Underground

The Kola Superdeep Borehole is a scientific drill hole on the Kola Peninsula, cold land in northwest Russia, near the Norwegian border. The USSR started the project in 1970 to sample and measure Earth's crust structure. They did not dig a wide pit for people to descend. They drilled many narrow branches from one point, of which branch SG-3 reached 12,262 meters in 1989.
