Genghis Khan’s Tomb: A Grave Hidden to Protect Power

Genghis Khan died in August 1227 during the campaign against Western Xia. The Mongols knew he had died and that his body had to return to his homeland, but they left no stone mausoleum, public marker or open map. Seven centuries later, the exact location has not been confirmed. UNESCO records Burkhan Khaldun as a mountain believed to be connected with Genghis Khan’s birth and burial, but the area is vast, difficult and protected as a sacred landscape.
