THE MONEY GAME

The Hope Diamond: A Curse Built to Sell a Colonial Gem

In 1958, a plain brown package travelled through the U.S. mail to the Smithsonian. Inside was not a military document or an ordinary exhibit, but a 45.52-carat blue diamond. Harry Winston sent it by registered post, insured it for one million dollars, and donated it so the public could see it. The stone became known as the Hope Diamond. A trace of boron gives it the blue colour, and ultraviolet light makes it glow red for several seconds.
